Miss Monroe County, Josephine Nicols

 Josephine’s passion for animal welfare was born from a life-changing rescue of her own. In 2022, she found Lamb Chop, a tiny cat trapped in the ceiling of the restaurant where she worked, and their bond became a turning point in her life. That experience inspired her service initiative, L.A.M.B.: Lead, Advocate, Mentor, Bond, which focuses on educating and empowering communities to support animals in and outside of shelters. Through weekly volunteering with Friends of Companion Animals, Josephine has cared for more than 100 cats and kittens, volunteered more than 150 hours, raised over $500 in donations and supplies, advocated for responsible pet ownership and TNR programs, and connected community members with valuable animal-welfare resources. As Miss Monroe County, she hopes to expand L.A.M.B. through shelter and veterinary partnerships, educational outreach, and eventually establish the initiative as a registered nonprofit. 

 For Josephine, being #MissAmericaFit means understanding that true wellness encompasses both physical and mental health. She prioritizes her well-being by fueling her body with wholesome foods, maintaining a consistent fitness routine, and practicing mindfulness and gratitude each day. She believes wellness is not about perfection, but about finding balance and consistently choosing habits that allow her to feel her best. Josephine has also turned that philosophy into a way to encourage others through her Full Cup Challenge, a social media initiative that challenges young women to incorporate one intentional wellness habit into each day, whether that means movement, hydration, positive affirmations, or simply taking time to unplug. For Josephine, filling her own cup gives her the energy and confidence to pour into the people around her. 

  Performing has been a part of Josephine’s life for years, with more than 30 musical productions under her belt and a natural love for being onstage. Her talent for vocal performance allows her to connect with an audience through both storytelling and music, which she brings to the Miss America stage through her talent, a vocal performance of “Maybe This Time.” Outside of performing, Josephine is a passionate live music fan who attends an average of 10 concerts each year and has even spent two years working as a party princess. Whether she is singing, acting, entertaining a crowd, or simply sharing her love of the arts with others, Josephine’s performance background has helped shape her confidence, creativity, and ability to connect with people.  

  Josephine’s journey through the Miss America Opportunity has been about far more than wearing a crown. Through the program, she has grown as a performer, advocate, and young woman while earning recognition for both her talent and her ability to connect with an audience. Her accomplishments include being a Top 11 Finalist and Miss Congeniality at Miss Michigan 2026, along with earning Talent Awards and On-Stage Question Awards throughout her MAO journey. The program has also provided Josephine with meaningful educational opportunities, helping her earn more than $12,000 in scholarships along the way. Now pursuing an associate degree in social work at Monroe County Community College with the goal of earning her Bachelor of Social Work and becoming a licensed social worker, Josephine hopes to continue using the opportunities provided by MAO to grow, serve, and represent Monroe County on the Miss Michigan stage in 2027.
